Expert Medical Treatment
When should I see a psychiatrist?
Mental health symptoms are not always straightforward. When symptoms are complex, have changed over time, or have not improved with previous treatment, a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation can help clarify what is happening and determine the most appropriate path forward.
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions and, therefore, can evaluate psychiatric symptoms within the broader context of physical health, medications, sleep, hormones, nutrition, and many other factors that may influence emotional and cognitive well-being. This is important because psychiatric conditions often do not exist in isolation.
Psychiatric expertise can be particularly important when medication is being considered or when someone is already taking multiple medications.
Medications intended to address different symptoms may interact, produce overlapping side effects, or sometimes complicate the clinical picture. Careful psychiatric medication management helps ensure that each medication remains appropriate, effective, and necessary.
Evaluation, diagnosis, & medication management with a caring expert
At Mensana Collaborative, comprehensive psychiatric care may include:
Diagnostic clarification, including distinguishing between conditions with similar or overlapping symptoms
Evidence-based medication management with careful consideration of potential benefits, risks, side effects, and alternatives
Review of multiple medications for potential interactions, unnecessary overlap, or opportunities to simplify treatment
Ongoing monitoring and adjustment of treatment as symptoms, health, and circumstances change
Consideration of medical and psychological factors that can affect mental health, including sleep, hormones, nutrition, and other health conditions
An individualized treatment plan developed collaboratively with the patient and adjusted over time
